Ectopic Beats

Extra or ectopic heart beats are a common phenomenon and are usually harmless.

They are usually caused when the hearts electrical conduction system generates an extra beat from a different or ‘ectopic’ area (cf Ectopic Pregnancy) in the heart that fires off an additional electrical impulse triggering the heart to beat prematurely.

Some people will be more aware of these extra beats and will feel a strange sensation when they occur, others may not experience any symptoms. They can be aggravated by certain stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, and foods like chocolate, strong cheeses. Times of stress and hormones can also exacerbate the amount of ectopic heart beats and therefore may increase the symptoms felt.
